To create the Fresh Me series, Shahram Entekhabi used 19th-century European images of “Oriental” men, in the form of artistic and ethnological paintings as well as photographs. During the process of drawing and copying these “Orientalist” images, Entekhabi inserted his own features into the faces of the men depicted in the original works. Entekhabi engages in critical yet playful strategies of Self-Exoticism to explore contemporary stereotypes and expectations that burden diasporic people, as well as others with hybrid identities
