Self Portrait as a Fountain refers to Bruce Nauman's 1966/67 photographic work of the same name. While Nauman uses the still images of photography to pretend that he can donate water like a fountain, Entekhabi uses the medium of the moving image on the one hand and replaces Nauman's water with blood on the other. What both works have in common is that they operate as ironic masquerades with the obviousness of the “fake” and question the productivity of artistic creation from the state of the “ennui” (Delacroix). The element of blood, on the other hand, ironically refers to the notion of the artist's personality 'emanating' in art production.

Self Portrait as a Fountain nimmt Bezug auf Bruce Naumans gleichnamige Fotoarbeit von 1966/67. Während sich Nauman der Stillstellung der Fotografie benutzt, um vorzugeben, er könne wie ein Brunnen unaufhörlich Wasser spenden, hat Entekhabi zum einen das Medium des Bewegtbilds benutzt und zum anderen das bei Nauman verhandelte Wasser durch Blut ersetzt. Beiden Arbeiten ist gemeinsam, dass sie als ironische Maskeraden mit der Offensichtlichkeit der "Fälschung" operieren und aus dem Zustand des "ennui" (Delacroix) hinaus die Produktivität des Kunstmachens hinterfragen.
