Egalitarian, 2019
By Shahram Entekhabi

Egalitarian (2019) delves into social dynamics and presents a critical viewpoint on the intricate interplay between power, consumption, and the human condition. Through the adept utilization of masks as transformative tools in this video, a potent metaphor emerges, encapsulating the complexities of modern existence and underscoring the profound impact of material possessions on our sense of self.

In both this video and Entekhabi's installations, masks play a skillful role, imbued with symbolic significance bestowed upon ordinary and utilitarian objects. In today's society, the act of consumption assumes a central position, shaping one's self-assurance. In Egalitarian, Entekhabi adorns a splendid silver mask, assuming the enigmatic persona of a character. With artistic finesse, he articulates phrases like "I embark on a worldwide journey to solve the dilemmas plaguing humankind" and deftly orchestrates the actions of a group wearing clown masks who echo his words in unison. These statements repeatedly reference Gabriel García Márquez's literary masterpiece, "The Sea of Lost Time." Within this work of literature, the character Mr. Herbert, hailed as "the wealthiest individual in the world," possesses an extensive fortune shrouded in mystery. Consequently, Mr. Herbert sets out on a global expedition to address humanity's challenges, aspiring to "redistribute his wealth." However, in order to obtain this wealth, individuals are compelled to endure the presence of a foreigner and undergo demeaning circumstances. Instead of embodying the concept of "the most equitable system of wealth distribution," Mr. Herbert subjects people to the vices of gambling, indebtedness, and prostitution.

Entekhabi harnesses the transformative power of masks not only within the Egalitarian video but also in his installations, bestowing symbolic meaning upon objects and goods. In today's world, where consumption assumes a central role in shaping personal identity, this artistic creation holds significant importance.

Egalitarian exposes the inherent paradoxes intricately woven into our socio-economic fabric, compelling us to confront the dynamics of power, inequality, and the commodification of human experience.
